Where are you supposed to safely dispose of batteries at?

I have a bunch of old used-up AA, AAA, D, and other size batteries that I want to get rid of properly. I know it's not environmentally safe to just throw them away with the regular garbage. I was wondering how are you supposed to safely get rid of them or recycle them?
