Why do they call a Tootsie Roll a roll?

It isn't in any way, shape or form a roll, it does role sometimes, but it isn't really a roll, so why do they call it that? Why didn't they call it a Tootsie Log? It looks a lot like a Lincoln log. Wouldn't that have been a better name?
